If you need to have a filling (restoration), your treatment options may include different materials. Dr. Goode and Dr. Johnson are happy to explain the advantages and disadvantages of each material, in order to provide you with best care possible.
Composite / Resin
Composite (resin) restorations have many advantages and are an option in many cases, including fillings on back teeth. Composite restorations are tooth-colored and can be matched to the individual shade of your tooth. Composite fillings are relatively strong and provide good durability in small to medium sized restorations.
Composite fillings also permit the preservation of as much of the tooth as possible. However, composite fillings are generally more expensive than amalgam (silver) fillings and are technique-sensitive, which may result in slightly longer appointments. Composite restorations are often an ideal choice for your dental filling.
Dental Amalgam / Silver Fillings
Dental amalgams are commonly called silver fillings, due to their silver color, and have been used successfully in dentistry for many years. Dental amalgams are strong and durable, even in large restorations. However, they can darken over time and may affect the appearance of the tooth. Dental amalgam requires the removal of some healthy tooth structure for placement. In some instances, dental amalgam is the best material as it can be placed in a wet environment.
